Arlington Department of Human Services (DHS) provides emergency assistance of up to $500 for rent or utility expenses. Income limits apply. Assistance is limited to one time during a six month period. DHS administers the state heating and cooling assistance programs, which have specific application periods throughout the year (see Virginia Dept. of Social Services Energy Assistance Program under “Regional” below).
DHS also provides referrals for AMEN, which administers Dominion Virginia’s EnergyShare utility assistance program.
DHS also administers the Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF) for families who do not qualify for, or who have exhausted, government energy assistance. WAFF pays for all types of fuel to heat homes during the winter (Jan. 1 – May 31 only).
