What are your housing choices? Read, watch videos, tour housing, and interview people who rent.
What housing assistance are you eligible for? What is available?
What housing can you afford?
What services do you need to help you maintain your housing?
What barriers might you have to housing, such as poor credit, criminal record, eviction history?

Develop your household spending plan and moving budget
Identify the location & features you need in housing
Get on waitlists for housing you can afford
Find ways to reduce expenses / increase income
Get housing documents in order
Start building / repairing credit
Develop a supportive services plan
Identify potential housemates & caregivers,
make housemate / caregiver agreements.

Your support coordinator or service provider can help you
apply to DBHDS for rental assistance:
See the Special Admissions Voucher FAQ.
You pay 30% of your adjusted monthly income toward rent
& utilities. The voucher pays the balance of rent.
Make sure your budget allows for rent and all other expenses. -
THE ROAD HOME USING A HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHERPART 2 (APPLY)Referral to Public Housing Authority (PHA).
If DBHDS finds you eligible for referral, they will refer you to a PHA
in the city or county in which you want to live.
The PHA will interview you and your family.
While this is going on, work with your support coordinator
to develop your service plan.

Your support coordinator and family can help you find
housing and complete applications.
Your voucher is good for 60 days.

THE ROAD HOME USING A HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHERPART 3 (FIND HOME)The rent and tenant-paid utilities must be paid within the PHA's
payment standard and the unit must pass an inspection.
Once approved:
- Complete your move-in checklist
- Take photos of each room
- Keep a copy of your lease and photos in a safe place!
